How we supported the British Physiological Society in reducing their mailing costs

The Client:

The British Psychological Society (BPS) champions psychology by promoting excellence in ethical practice, training and research, and by amplifying psychologists’ voices to influence public policy. The BPS was granted its Royal Charter in 1965 and has a responsibility to also increase public awareness of psychology and how it can be used to positively impact individuals and society.

The BPS supports its 65,000 members with a range of resources to enhance their professional careers, with a variety of publications, events and CPD, networking opportunities and access to the magazine The Psychologist in print and digital editions.

Context:

In 2021, Citipost Mail commenced a partnership with the BPS following a successful tender to handle the distribution of their member magazine across the UK and internationally. The primary objective for BPS was to reduce their magazine mailing expenses while retaining an effective service for their members.

The approach:

As industry experts, we identified an opportunity to provide immediate cost savings for BPS. We proposed utilising an agency agreement, given BPS’s status as a registered charity, which reduced BPS’s postage costs by more than 20%.

After securing the agency agreement, our business development team conducted thorough research to identify applicable Royal Mail incentives that could further reduce BPS’s mailing expenses. By collaborating closely with BPS to understand their goals and upcoming forecasted volumes, we successfully applied for the Royal Mail Publishing Volume Commitment Incentive. This incentive awarded BPS with an additional 2% of savings.

Additionally, through our collaboration and understanding of BPS’s requirements, we identified that our Digi-Mail product could enhance the efficiency of their letter communications. We implemented the Digi-Mail cloud-based mailing solution at BPS quickly and provided comprehensive training to the team. By introducing Digi-Mail to the office environment we reduced their printed letter costs by 50% and significantly reduced the time spent on manual postal tasks.

In 2024 our relationship further extended to include the fulfilment and personalisation of the magazines. Streamlining the processes for BPS by combining our fulfilment and distribution capabilities to deliver more cost savings to the society.

Outcome:

We now support the BPS in the fulfilment and distribution of c.45,000 copies of The Psychologist magazine to its members each month. We have a strong relationship with BPS, providing them with support from our Client Services and Business Development teams. This ongoing collaboration not only identifies additional cost optimisation opportunities for BPS but also enhances their operational efficiency and overall satisfaction with our services
